Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane.
The Primary Care Coalition mission, revised in 2008, is to be the catalyst for the development and coordination of a community-based health care system that strives for universal access and health equity for underserved residents. The organization works with many partners and collaborators in order to achieve this mission. Most notably, the PCC has been an active participant since 2007 in the Institute for healthcare Improvement's international "Triple Aim" initiative, which seeks to improve the health of a defined population by optimizing poopulation health, patient experience, and cost per capita. Information about The Triple Aim is published within the "Resources from Collaborators and Others" section.
In January 2007, the PCC was awarded the first Susan G. Komen Communit-Academic Partnership grant, in partnership with the Uniformed Services University and the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services. The project included a needs assessment for breast cancer screening for low-income, uninsured women at partnering clinics, and is piloting a community-based patient navigation program for breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. A second Komen award was made in the autumn of 2007 to enhance the efficiency of the Montgomery County DHHS Women's Cancer Control Program, the main screening program for uninsured county women. These grants also afforded an opportunity for the PCC to develop a continuing medical education program, "A Review of Breast Cancer Screening: The Role of Culture." information about this program is contained within the CME section.
Among other content in the Reports and Resources heading is information about research being conducted at the Primary Care Coalition. PCC Research Director, Dr. Maria Rosa Watson, DDS, PhD, MPH is the principal investigator for two recent NIH grants: an R03 testing health literacy instruments in cardiovascular screening of recent Latino Immigrants, and an R21 for community-based participatory research at health fair settings.
