The overall pneumococcal vaccination rate stands at just 17%, according to the report, a sharp decline from its peak of 23% in FY22. This means that more than four out of five seniors in our care remain unprotected against a preventable disease. Meanwhile, pneumonia incidence within the network is approximately 72 cases per 100,000—a sobering reminder of the consequences of under-vaccination.
The reasons behind these gaps are clear. Despite strong evidence supporting pneumococcal vaccination, funding for prevention efforts is insufficient. Current resources cannot cover the full senior population at risk, and the Community Pharmacy budget falls short of meeting both vaccine and administration costs for most patients. This financial shortfall leaves many older adults without access to this essential preventive service, forcing them to face unnecessary health risks simply because they cannot afford protection.
Investing in pneumococcal prevention is more than a health priority—it is a cost-saving measure. Every hospitalization avoided, every case of pneumonia prevented, translates into reduced healthcare spending and improved quality of life for seniors. By addressing these gaps now, we can prevent suffering, save lives, and demonstrate our commitment to equitable, proactive care. With adequate funding and expanded access, we can ensure that every older adult receives the protection they need and deserve.
