(Silver Spring, Maryland) - With capital investment from the Nexus Montgomery Regional Partnership, Cornerstone Montgomery has begun operating its third crisis house, serving community members experiencing a mental health crisis. The new facility accommodates eight patients and is located on Layhill Road, Silver Spring, Maryland.
This crisis house is a necessary resource for the severely mentally ill and will provide patients with a cost-effective, appropriate, community-based treatment option.

The crisis house quickly reached full capacity, confirming the tremendous need for additional resources for this vulnerable population. The new 8-bed crisis house brings the total number of beds in Montgomery County to 24 and will serve about 200 people per year, based on an average stay of 14 days. It is the first ADA compliant crisis house in the community.
Cornerstone Montgomery has operated two crisis houses for over 12 years, but the need for short-term residential services in the community has continued to exceed the available capacity. Nexus Montgomery hospitals frequently house patients experiencing a mental health crisis due to a lack of appropriate community-based treatment options. Hospital emergency departments and inpatient units do not provide the best therapeutic environment for individuals with severe psychiatric needs, and is also the most expensive point of service. Crisis houses address this need in a patient-centered, cost-effective manner by caring for patients that would otherwise require treatment in a hospital setting.
Startup funding for the crisis house was provided by Nexus Montgomery-a partnership of the six hospitals in Montgomery County that focuses on collaborating with community organizations, such as Cornerstone Montgomery, to improve access and coordination of health services, and reduce avoidable utilization of hospital services. Nexus Montgomery initially has four major initiatives, including one that focuses resources on the severely mentally ill.

By keeping people healthy and connecting them to appropriate community-based care, Nexus Montgomery initiatives avoid unnecessary hospital use, reduce the total cost of hospital care, and improve quality of care in the community.
